Essay outline builder

Build an editable essay outline from a template and your own thesis, notes and evidence. Organize section word counts in your browser; no AI-written essay.

Start your outline

Whole words, from 1 to 100,000. Suggested allocations will sum to this target.

Template outline

Choose a template, enter your topic and word target, and build an outline.

A structure for your own ideas

Choose argumentative, compare and contrast, persuasive, expository, or research paper. Templates provide headings and prompts. You supply claims, evidence, analysis, and the final writing. Follow your assignment’s required structure; the research template is a starting point, not a universal disciplinary format.

How words are allocated

We allocate the target proportionally by section weights, round each share down, then assign remaining words to the largest-weight sections in template order. A 1,000-word argumentative outline suggests 150 for introduction, 250 for each of three body sections, and 100 for conclusion. Very small targets may give some sections zero words.

Keep your work

Changing template or target never silently replaces notes. Rebuild and choose to keep edits, reset explicitly, or cancel. Plain-text and Markdown downloads include your topic, thesis, headings, notes, and evidence slots. Nothing saves automatically; export before refreshing or closing.

Essay outline templates for your own argument

Read the assignment prompt before choosing a template. An argumentative essay needs a position to defend; a comparison needs clear points of comparison; an expository task needs an explanation. Pick the structure that fits the task and adjust its headings to match your instructions.

For each body section, write a claim, the source or example that supports it, and a note explaining why that evidence matters. If you cannot identify the purpose of a section, refine it before drafting. The outline supplies a structure, not researched claims or a finished essay.

Use suggested word allocations as a starting budget. A section with several important sources may need more space than a brief introduction. After drafting, compare the actual balance with the outline and revise where the argument needs support rather than trying to fill every allocation exactly.

Common questions

How do I make an argumentative essay outline?

Choose the argumentative template, enter your position as the thesis and organize claims, evidence and counterarguments in the editable sections. Add real source notes yourself. The template helps plan the structure; it does not research or write the argument.

Is this an AI essay outline generator?

No. The generator arranges your own information into deterministic templates. It runs in your browser and does not send your topic or notes to an AI service. You can revise the headings and suggested word allocations before drafting.

Does the builder write the essay for me?

No. You provide the topic, thesis, notes and evidence. Templates organize your work and can be edited; they do not invent sources or generate essay prose.

Can I change templates after adding notes?

Yes. Rebuilding offers a choice to keep edits, reset or cancel. Keeping edits preserves matching sections and retains unmatched edited sections as additional sections. Review the rebuilt outline before continuing.

Is the research-paper template suitable for every subject?

It is a starting structure, not a substitute for a departmental format. Follow any required headings, methodology sections and reporting conventions in your assignment.
