A sample-based estimate
We measured three original prose samples in 108 layouts using locally installed Times New Roman and Arial in Chromium. Profiles use the median capacity rounded to the nearest 25 words. Single spacing uses 1.2 times the font size for line height; 1.5 and double multiply that height. Paragraphs have six points of space after them.
For 12pt Times New Roman, Letter paper, one-inch margins, and double spacing, the reference profile is 275 words per page. 1,000 words estimate to 3.64 pages, or about four whole pages. Pages-to-words multiplies by the same profile.
Your actual document can differ
Headings, quotations, footnotes, tables, paragraph length, font versions, and your editor’s layout rules affect the result. These sample layouts are not a guarantee for Word or Google Docs. Check your assignment’s formatting instructions and the actual document preview.

Words to pages for single- and double-spaced essays
A page requirement depends on layout as well as words. Choose the profile closest to your assignment’s font, spacing, paper size and margins. Use the estimate to set a drafting target, then check the actual page count in the document you will submit.
The calibrated baseline uses 12-point Times New Roman, Letter paper and one-inch margins: approximately 550 words per single-spaced page or 275 per double-spaced page. Under the double-spaced baseline, 1,100 words estimates four pages. The profiles come from measured prose samples; they remain estimates rather than guarantees for your document editor.
Headings, short paragraphs, quotations, tables and images take space differently from continuous prose. A title page or bibliography may also count separately under your course rules. Do not change required margins or shrink the font just to make an estimate fit.
Common questions
How many pages is 1,000 words?
Using this tool’s calibrated 12-point Times New Roman baseline on Letter paper with one-inch margins, 1,000 words is about 1.82 single-spaced pages or 3.64 double-spaced pages. Headings and paragraph breaks affect the final document; check your editor before submitting.
How many words are in a five-page double-spaced essay?
At the 275-words-per-page double-spaced baseline, five pages is approximately 1,375 words. A 500-word draft is about 1.82 pages at the same settings. Change the layout profile when your assignment uses a different format.
Does a four-page essay always mean 1,100 words?
No. That is an estimate for the stated double-spaced baseline. Your document layout and the assignment’s definition of a page determine the final length.
Why does the result show fractional and whole pages?
Fractional pages show the estimated space occupied. Whole pages round upward: a draft occupying 3.2 pages still extends onto a fourth page. Neither result measures your document directly.
Should references be included in my word count?
Follow the assignment instructions. Estimate the main text separately when references are excluded, and leave space for other required sections in your actual document.
