Final grade calculator

Find the score you need on your final exam for a target course grade, or project an overall grade. Calculate privately from your syllabus weights.

Your course

Excludes the final and represents all completed coursework.

Share of the entire course grade. The remaining share uses your current grade.

How the calculation works

Your course grade is current grade × (1 − final weight) + final score × final weight. Weight is divided by 100 before calculation. To find the required score, rearrange this formula: (target − current grade × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

A worked example

A current grade of 72%, a final worth 30%, and a target of 75% require 82% on the final: (75 − 72 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 82.

Check your course policy

This assumes ordinary percentages from 0 to 100. It does not model dropped assignments, extra credit, curved grades, or institutional rounding. A required score above 100% stays visible and is marked unreachable; a score at or below zero means a zero on the final already meets the target. A zero final weight is allowed only for projecting your grade.

What do I need on my final exam?

Enter the average for the completed portion of the course, the final exam’s share of the full course grade, and your target percentage. A gradebook may display either an average over graded work or points already earned toward the full course. Those are different values; confirm which one you have before using it as your current grade.

Suppose completed work averages 80% and represents 75% of the course. It contributes 60 percentage points to the full result. A final worth 25% with a score of 80% adds 20 points, giving an 80% course grade. The calculation assumes the final is the only remaining component.

Use the required score to set a study goal and compare several realistic targets. A result over 100% means the target cannot be reached under this model. It is a useful planning signal, not a prediction about your exam performance or a decision about your official grade.

Common questions

How do I calculate the final exam grade I need?

Subtract the points already contributed by completed work from your target course grade, then divide by the final exam’s weight as a decimal. With an 80% current average, a 30% final and an 85% target, the required final score is approximately 96.67%.

Can I use this as a final exam calculator to find my overall grade?

Yes. Switch to the overall-grade mode and enter a possible final score alongside the completed-work average and exam weight. The result models those inputs; separate pass requirements, extra credit or dropped assignments can change your official outcome.

What if assignments remain as well as the final?

This model treats the final as the remaining component. Use the weighted grade calculator to examine multiple components, or wait until you know the completed-work average for the portion outside the final.

Does it include extra credit or a curve?

No. It uses ordinary percentages and the weight you enter. Ask your instructor how special grading rules affect your target.

Why is the required score negative?

Under the entered assumptions, your completed work already contributes enough to meet the target even with zero on the final. Course rules may still require taking or passing the exam.
