Review or edit the grade scale

Illustrative scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, F = 0.0. This is not a universal institutional policy. Edit points to match your course rules.

Your credit-weighted GPA

Choose grades and credits, then calculate your GPA.

Credits determine the weight

Multiply each included course’s grade points by its credits to get quality points. Add the quality points and divide by total included credits. An A at three credits plus a B at three credits gives (4 × 3 + 3 × 3) ÷ 6 = 3.50.

Use your institution’s rules

The starting grade scale is illustrative and editable. Excluded rows remain visible but contribute no credits or points. Institutions may treat pass/fail, withdrawn, repeated, or transferred courses differently. This calculator does not apply repeated-course replacement, percentage conversion, or combine prior cumulative GPAs.

How to calculate GPA using grades and credit hours

Use the grade-point scale published by your institution and the credits attached to each course. Credits determine how much a course contributes: a six-credit course has twice the weight of a three-credit course with the same grading scale.

For example, a three-credit course worth 4.0 points and a six-credit course worth 3.0 points contribute 12 and 18 quality points. Divide their 30 total quality points by nine credits to obtain a GPA of about 3.33. Averaging 4.0 and 3.0 without credits would give a different result.

Check transcript rules before entering repeated courses, pass/fail courses or withdrawn courses. Some institutions exclude them or replace an earlier grade. Enter only the courses and credits that belong in the calculation under your policy; the calculator does not apply those rules automatically.

Common questions

How do I calculate my semester GPA?

Multiply each included course’s grade points by its credits, add those quality points and divide by total included credits. For example, a 3-credit course at 4.0 and another at 3.0 produce 21 quality points across 6 credits, giving a GPA of 3.50.

Does weighted GPA mean the same thing as weighted course grades?

No. This GPA tool weights courses by credits. A high-school weighted GPA may also award extra grade points for particular course levels; enter your approved scale if applicable. Assignment percentages within a course belong in the weighted grade calculator, not this GPA formula.

Can I use a grading scale other than 4.0?

The grade scale is editable within the supported fields. Enter your institution’s grade-point values rather than assuming letter grades have the same value everywhere.

Can I convert a percentage directly to GPA?

There is no universal percentage-to-GPA conversion in this tool. Use your institution’s official mapping if it provides one, then enter the corresponding grade.

Is the result an official transcript GPA?

It is a calculation from the values you supply. Institutional rounding, exclusions and repeat-course policies may produce a different official figure.
